The Rutherford Cancer Centres are at the forefront of innovative cancer care with their UK network of centres.
The Rutherford Cancer Centres operate a network of cancer centres, nationally and internationally, providing all-encompassing cancer services for patients. Our vision is to transform cancer care for patients by providing personalised and holistic support.
Our centres deliver high-quality diagnostic imaging and the latest in advanced cancer treatments including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and, in the future, proton beam therapy across all our centres. Every patient that comes to a Rutherford Cancer Centre is provided with a personalised and tailored treatment plan and their own support team. As part of the ‘Rutherford’s networked, centralised system’, patients can attend any of the centres according to their needs, with the option to attend the care oncology clinic at one centre and travel to another for treatment as necessary. edit test
Rutherford Cancer Centres are built and managed by Proton Partners International, the forerunners in innovative cancer care and leading developers of proton beam therapy centres in the UK and beyond. The centres take their name from renowned scientist and Noble Prize winner, Ernest Rutherford, whose contribution to identifying (1909-1919) and naming of the proton (1920) saw him recognised as the father of nuclear physics.
In 2017, Rutherford opened their first UK centre in Newport, South Wales, known as the Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales. South Wales became the first cancer centre in the UK to officially offer high energy proton beam therapy, making great leaps in the innovation of cancer care after treating the first patient with proton therapy in the UK in April 2018.
During 2018, the Rutherford Cancer Centre network expanded to include the Rutherford Cancer Centre North East in Bedlington, Northumberland and the Rutherford Cancer Centre Thames Valley in Shinfield, Reading. Both of these centres are being set up to offer proton beam therapy treatments to adults in the UK and are expected to be available from Spring 2019 in the North East and Autumn 2019 at the Thames Valley centre.
Late 2018 also saw the initial development of a new centre, the Rutherford Cancer Centre North West, which will open in Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter development, near to the city hospital and university. The centre is scheduled to open in 2019, with proton therapy treatments anticipated from Spring 2020.
Rutherford Cancer Centre South Wales was the first of our centres to be approved by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee (WHSSC) to provide adults referred from the NHS in Wales, high energy proton beam therapy as a treatment, in December 2018.
The Future at Rutherford
To date, Rutherford has three cancer centres open, one of which currently offers access to proton beam therapy, and a further four new centres planned in the next four years making a total of eight cancer centres around the UK. Our aim is to provide the majority of patients with a state-of-the-art cancer centre within a ninety-minute journey of their front door, wherever they are in the UK.
